World Creativity and Innovation Day 2024 - 2024 April 21st

World Creativity and Innovation Day is a global UN day celebrated on April 21 to raise awareness around the importance of creativity and innovation in problem solving.

World Creativity and Innovation Day is a day for the global community to realize that creativity and innovation are crucial for a country's economy. These forces can drive economic growth, create jobs and offer opportunities for everyone, including women and young people. They can also be used to solve serious issues like poverty and hunger. In the 21st century, the creativity and innovation of a person or a group of people are the most valuable resources a nation can have.

There may be no universal understanding of creativity, but ...

Creativity refers to the ability to generate or come up with new, original, and innovative ideas or solutions that are typically characterized by originality, expressiveness, and imagination. It's a process of seeing the world in new ways, breaking from established patterns or traditional norms to produce something unique and valuable. Creativity can be applied to any field such as art, science, education, technology and business.

Creativity plays - from my way of thinking and believing - a major role in society, the world, and our future because:

  • Economic Development: Creativity leads to innovation which is a key driver of economic growth and prosperity. Business sectors that are creative are likely to experience more growth compared to those that are not.
  • Problem Solving: Creativity enables us to see things from various perspectives and come up with unique solutions. This is vital in tackling global challenges like poverty, climate change, and social injustice.
  • Cultural Diversity: Creativity contributes to cultural richness and diversity. It helps to encourage respect and understanding among different cultures or societies, resulting in a more cohesive and tolerant world.
  • Enhancing Education: Creativity in education encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills which can help students to be innovative thinkers and prepare them for the evolving future job market.
  • Influences Technology: In the tech industry, it’s creativity that leads to the invention of new devices, applications, and platforms that have the potential to greatly impact our future, from healthcare to communication and beyond.
  • Creates Opportunities: Creativity often leads to invention and entrepreneurship, creating new business industries, and opportunities for employment.

In essence, creativity is the fuel for progress and will play a significant role in shaping our future.

Creativity in life and for life

Creativity holds immense importance in life, and for life for a variety of reasons:

  • Enhances Problem-Solving Skills: Creativity helps develop the ability to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions to problems.
  • Lifetime Learning: Being creative encourages continuous learning and curiosity about the world which can lead to personal growth and development.
  • Boosts Confidence: When you create something unique or solve a problem innovatively, it boosts self-esteem and confidence in your abilities.
  • Expresses Individuality: Creativity allows for personal expression and individuality. Through various creative outlets such as painting, music, writing, etc., one can express feelings and thoughts.
  • Emotional Health: Creative activities can be therapeutic and help manage emotions, reduce stress, and improve overall mental health.
  • Social Connections: Creativity brings people together by providing opportunities to collaborate, share ideas, and learn from each other, helping build strong social connections.
  • Innovation and Progress: On a larger scale, creativity leads to innovation and progress in various aspects of life including technology, medicine, and infrastructure.

Essentially, creativity adds colour and richness to life, helps in personal and societal growth, and shapes the course of our future.

Creative Problem Solving

Since I can remember I am using a kind of creative problem solving - when I look at it with my knowledge of today - it is more or less a kind of  two-phased process, which entails understanding a problem, generating ideas to solve it, and evaluating the solutions.
Perhaps it rings a bell for one or two - pretty similar to the creative and design approaches we know to today. The two kinds of thinking that I am encouraging are divergent, where multiple options / alternatives / viewpoints are generated, and convergent, where these options are evaluated.
The first phase, or better step I take, involves identifying the problem, researching it, formulating creative challenges and generating ideas.
The second step requires honing down these ideas using convergent thinking to select and develop the best ones.
Other important aspects of this process / thinking include asking open-ended questions, generating large quantities of ideas (even wild ones) and taking time to select and refine the best ideas.
