26 September - European Day of Languages

I often say that in design all too often you can not separate visual design and language as it forms a mental picture.

Today is the European Day of Languages. And I like to share a phrase / a saying which all of us know in different languages and the idea and the mental picture is so different:

By the way I love that Polish and Italian are the only two that aren't explicitly violent.

Great Britain / Spain:
"Kill two birds with one stone"

Germany:
"Hit two flies with one fly swatter"  "Zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen"

France:
"Deal two blows with one stone" (Originally probably as well referring to birds)

Poland:
"Roast two pieces of meat on one fire"

Italia:
"Catch to pigeons with one fava bean"

Norway / Denmark / Sweden / Finland / Netherlands ... and a few more
"Hit two flies with one slap"

26 September 2022 marks the 21th anniversary of the European Day of Languages.

Since 2001, the Day has been celebrating the rich tapestry of languages coexisting in Europe and beyond. According to Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić “The European Day of Languages reminds us that all voices matter and that together we can overcome linguistic and cultural divides in our societies”.
