Especially in the context of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and psychosocial emergency care (PSNV), a central question arises:
Can AI-based systems serve as a meaningful complement to human support — or do they create an illusion of closeness without genuine human connection?
Digital assistants respond instantly, do not judge, and can be used anonymously. This can lower barriers and encourage first steps toward seeking help. At the same time, psychosocial support is more than offering conversational prompts. It is built on relationship, resonance, situational awareness, and responsibility.
The following analysis examines Therabot and comparable applications such as Wysa, Woebot, and Replika, focusing on mechanisms of action, target groups, evidence, and professional limitations.
Can an Algorithm Comfort?
Can artificial intelligence show compassion — or does it merely simulate empathy so convincingly that we barely notice the difference?
In psychosocial emergency care, every gesture, every pause, and every human connection matters. Meanwhile, AI chatbots such as Therabot, Wysa, Woebot, and Replika promise emotional support via smartphone — around the clock, anonymous, and without waiting times. For some, this represents a revolution in access to mental healthcare. For others, it signals a potentially dangerous simplification of deeply human processes.
Digital systems can listen, structure, and reflect — but they do not carry responsibility. They recognize patterns, but not the subtle dynamics in a room. They respond, but they do not feel.
The key question is no longer whether AI has entered the mental health space. It already has.
The real question is: Where is its place — and where must it not be?
My Review of the Four Tools / Apps

What does this mean?

Clinical evaluations showed reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms after eight weeks of use. Notably, the developers intentionally avoided generative AI, instead relying on a carefully designed NLP system to ensure safety and content control.
